SUMMARY

This is a new book in which Book IV is considered in totality, as a work with a hidden, but unified theme. Rather than take the dedicatees as subjects for adulation, it seeks to establish some connectivity between them as the 'new men' created by Augustus to buttress his endeavours to become undisputed head of state and dispense with Agrippa and Maecenas. Book IV is therefore seen as ambiguous writing; damning with faint praise and biting satire.
