Section 1
PROLOGUE
§1. Therefore, that to be grasped in general about geography, should be about the clarification of map–making in accordance with historical accounts of the known parts of the earth until the present time, as well as concerning map–making in relation to our habitable world and of places to one another and of their appearance, especially in similarity of style, as far as our representation of them allows.
§2. From here we make a beginning, concerning the principle parts, by acknowledging that being involved with the writing down of longtitudes and latitudes of long known places, which have been assigned by continuous tradition is, as near as possible, the true nature of things. In respect of locations not having been explored or because of scanty, uncertain and incomplete passage of historical accounts, let us consider using the nearest possible trustworthy points of reference, having already been noted, in order that nothing, having been inserted by ourselves to complete of the whole of the habitable earth, had indeterminate positions.
§3. Therefore, we have placed beside each, for the purpose of comparison, in the margins of the pages, the accepted degrees of the places, however placing in front of latitude, that of longtitude, in order that if certain correcting is demanded from further reports having been made, space has been left next to them for it to be carried out.
§4. Concerning the map–making, we have preferred the arrangement having the most serviceable ease of use in all respects, this is the one that is in relation to the right hand and the insertions will be made from those having been classified to those not as yet taken in hand.
§5. These should be drawn as if the northern come before the southern and the western before the eastern, since the eye, lighting upon what has been written above, suggests the north, while that to the right hand, the east of the habitable world, on both sphere and flat surface.
§6. First we arrange Europe, separating it, and us, from Libya by the Straits of Hercules, then from Asia, after the sea and the swamp of Myotia, by the river Tanis, placed between and by the meridian from so great and unknown land. Then the place relating to Libya, separating if from Asia between the seas against the Prasum promontory of Ethiopia as far as the gulf of Arabia and that through as far as isthmus from the interior of Heroopoliticus to our sea, separating Egypt from Arabia and Judea. We may not divide Egypt by the Nile, where making the distribution, for continents are much better to be bounded by seas, whenever possible, and not by rivers.
§7. Finally we subjoin Asia, being resolved that, in relation to the whole earth, the share of each of the continents together, represent the habitable world, and again inscribing first the most northern and western of the regions and lying besides them the seas and each of the particular islands amongst them most worthy of mention.
§8. We must distinguish, by drawing around the areas of provinces, prefectures and all such kindof thing, making as a guide a serviceable register noting only places as far as are known, having disregarded tall stories concerning idiosyncratic accounts of peoples, except where, having been associated with something remarkable, it would require a concise mark of distinction.
§9. In this way those wishing to inscribe maps with parts of the known world will be able to insert one or many prefectures or provinces that would be accommodated in due proportion on such maps, in company with a befitting proportion and form, each map will have been created encompassing a proper relationship towards other known places.
§10. For this purpose it is of no great concern if we desire to draw, for the parallels and meridians, straight lines for the parallels, if the correct proportion in the intervals of degrees of the meridians to that of parallels is taken beforehand, and which it holds to the great circle, about to be the central parallel of this map
§11. Having defined these then, one must begin, henceforth, the task of laying down the actual parts.
